Linux Spirit
I've been a long time dealing with Linux especially Slackware. Till now the newest version is 10.2. I do love it because almost every configuration should be done in manual way using available command.
Now I try to install slackware from very minimal and only put needed things. I try to make the smallest possible slackware version for special purposes.
For example, most cybercafe here use Microsoft Windows XP. They must share directories across the network and at least there's one big directory to put customer's data. Windows XP limits user. In professional edition, it's 10. And in Home edition, it's only 5. So it's impossible for 20 or more clients to write and read at the same time. Then I created minimal Slackware with samba. It mounts Windows XP shares and share them again thru Samba.
Windows XP knows only 1 user connecting, but every customer/client can read and write data freely.
I use umsdos as file system. I also compress them so admin can easily re-deploy if something goes wrong. They don't want to get one computer only for that purpose.
So I suggest to use VMWare. With only 16MB memory (in vmware), it's enough to run the minimal slackware.
I know slackware has zipslack and it's more than 200MB when extracted. My minimalist slackware only 60MB when extracted. It's cool !
